What I do:
At When Butter met Sugar I specialise in making bespoke cakes for all occasions while also serving coffee and cake by the slice in the coffee shop. I take bookings for afternoon tea, available to sit in or takeaway. If you're looking to get involved in some cake decorating I offer one-off workshops and parties. Don't forget to check out all the seasonal bakes I offer too!
Did you know I also supply cakes to The Crucible Theatre?!
About the business and me:
My name is Amy, I am the proud sole owner of When Butter met Sugar.
I started the business from home in 2021 when my hobby began to gain in popularity over lockdown.
Thanks to my nan, I have been baking since I was 4 years old and haven't stopped. I have always dreamed of opening my own cake and coffee shop. On 26th May 2023 that dream came true!
On 10th April 2023 I got the keys to my own shop and thus began 6 and a half weeks of tough renovations. As we were on a budget and I wanted to get the shop open as quickly as possible, we decided to do as much of the renovation ourselves as we could. So we ripped out everything we didn't need and tried to save as much as we could to use later on. We knocked down a wall to make a doorway, replaced some old plasterboard, plastered the entire room, laid down laminate flooring, painted, decorated, put together a LOT of flatpack furniture and made a few mistakes haha. But it was all worth it in the end, even if I did have plaster in my hair for a week.
I am so grateful for all my friends and family's help, I can't thank them enough for helping make my dream come true!
Education and Qualifications:
I studied level 2 and 3 Professional Bakery at Sheffield City College and graduated with a Diploma in both and a certificate in food safety for manufacturing.
While at college I entered a few competitions, winning a bronze for sugar flowers, bronze for a carved novelty cake and silver for an anniversary cake.
After finishing college I got a PME Masters in cake decorating.
